Hurricane Florence Update

Hurricane Florence is coming, but it will reach land a bit later than we expected.

The storm is only about 600 miles off the coast of North Carolina. However, landfall may not happen until Friday afternoon or even as late as Saturday morning.

"Landfall timing is getting trickier," says Domenica Davis, a meteorologist for the Weather Channel. The question of when the hurricane will hit is due to the fact that it may go farther south than expected.

As of 8 AM Wednesday, the National Weather Service sent out an update confirming that the storm was still a category 4 hurricane.

Up to this point, Florence has to lost any strength as winds are still reaching up to 130 mph. In addition to heavy winds, there will be heavy rain that will cause major flooding.

"The intensity of the storm stays extreme right up until landfall," says Davis. Areas along the coast are looking at over 40 inches of rain and over 10 feet of storm surge.

The storm, which originally was predicted to reach as far north as Maryland, has shifted a bit in its trajectory. The storm seems to be moving more towards the south. The storm will still hit far inland over the weekend though. Areas as far west as Athens, GA could still see a major amount of rainfall and some flooding.
